The weekly protest for the progressive Northwest Valley Indivisible group at 9 a.m. Saturday will focus on the detention center plans.
“Our message is simple: No ICE facility in Surprise,” said Brent Peak, co-chair of Northwest Valley Indivisible. “ICE cruelty has become normalized, and the Trump administration has failed to protect basic civil and human rights. Expansion without reform must stop.”
Axios reported last year that federal data showed 31 people died in ICE custody last year. That was 11 more the previous year.
“This facility is part of a system that cannot be trusted to police itself,” Peak said. “Communities have a responsibility to draw clear lines before harm occurs.”
