SURPRISE, AZ — Nearly six months into his first term, Rep. Abe Hamadeh has yet to hold a single public event open to constituents in Arizona’s 8th Congressional District. His only two appearances — one in March at a private residence in Scottsdale for a Republican club, and one in April at a closed conservative event — were not open to the public.
Neither Hamadeh’s home nor his district office are located inside CD-8. His so-called “mobile office hours” — scheduled again for next Thursday — are typically staffed by aides, with no sign the congressman will appear. For a Republican representing one of the state’s most conservative districts, Hamadeh’s unwillingness to appear in public — even before his own supporters — raises obvious questions.
Faced with his refusal to schedule an open town hall, more than 200 constituents organized one themselves in March — a public event where over 30 people spoke and more than 80 submitted written concerns. Hamadeh refused to attend.
His hostility toward public engagement was on display weeks earlier, when constituents attempted to visit his office in February. Staff called police and threatened demonstrators with arrest for stepping on office property. One constituent’s car was even towed from the lot — where Hamadeh supporters were later allowed to sell MAGA merchandise during a counter protest held in coordination with his office.
Since then, Hamadeh has doubled down on attacking his own constituents. He continues to spread false claims in right-wing media, portraying peaceful local protestors as “paid professional agitators.” In truth, thousands of district residents have attended more than a dozen peaceful demonstrations in the past five months — with zero incidents of violence or police enforcement. Protestors themselves have requested police presence due to harassment from MAGA supporters.
Congress will be on recess next week, a time when representatives typically return home to meet with voters. Hamadeh has given no indication that he will hold any public events. After constituents pointed out that his official calendar was always empty, he removed the calendar entirely from his website.
“It’s stunning that after half a year in office, Rep. Hamadeh still hasn’t faced the people he’s supposed to represent,” said Brent Peak of Northwest Valley Indivisible. “Instead of showing accountability, he’s hiding behind lies and closed doors. Voters in this district deserve better.”
