Only Days Left to Save Peoria Mother from Deportation — Northwest Valley Indivisible Urges Rep. Hamadeh to Act

UPDATE: We urge everyone to also send a message to the White House at https://www.whitehouse.gov/contact/.

Time is running out for Kelly Yu, a longtime Peoria resident, business owner, wife, and mother with no criminal record, who could be deported within the next two weeks. She was detained in May while complying with a routine immigration check-in.

This weekend, NWVI Co-Chair Brent Peak and members of other local Indivisible chapters met with Kelly’s husband, Aldo Urquiza, at the couple’s sushi restaurant in Peoria. Aldo expressed gratitude for the community’s support but underscored the urgency of the situation.

“We are running out of time,” Aldo said. “We probably have one week, maybe two.”

Even under immense pressure, Aldo and Kelly have been helping other detainees and their families, offering comfort and guidance to those in similar situations. “It was moving to hear how they’ve been helping others even in the middle of their own fight,” Peak said.

Kelly fled China more than two decades ago while pregnant with her daughter. She has built a life in Peoria, raising her family and contributing to the community. Her husband and daughter are U.S. citizens.

Northwest Valley Indivisible urges Congressman Hamadeh—whose own parents were given the chance to remain in the United States after facing deportation over 30 years ago—to act with the same compassion our country showed to his family. The group calls on Hamadeh to:

      1. Directly intervene with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to halt Kelly’s deportation.

      1. Visit Kelly in detention to hear her story firsthand.

      1. Work with congressional colleagues to secure humanitarian relief for her case and others facing similar circumstances.

“This is a rare moment of political unity,” Peak said. “Republicans and Democrats alike are saying ICE has gone too far. Kelly’s family deserves the same chance Congressman Hamadeh’s family was given, and now is the time for him to act.”

Community members are urged to call Rep. Hamadeh’s office immediately at (623) 776-7911 and ask him to help return Kelly Yu to her family in Peoria.
