On Saturday, June 14, millions of Americans took to the streets for No Kings Day — one of the largest protests in our nation’s history. Here in our district alone, over 5700 people showed up across multiple intersections to make their voices heard. Our message was simple: We will not bow down to a king, and neither should anyone else.

But as Indivisible’s Sarah Dohl reminded us this week:

“What we achieved Saturday was momentous and inspiring. But its real impact will be determined by what we do next.”

You may have heard about the “3.5% rule” — the observation that when at least 3.5% of a population mobilizes in resistance, authoritarian regimes usually fall. But as Dohl put it:

“The 3.5% is a historically important target — but not a magic number. We doubt any readers believe that if we got 11.8 million Americans to take to the streets, Trump would miraculously resign the next day. Or that one massive protest would be sufficient to secure our democracy against the deeply-rooted threats it faces.”

It will take more than one day. More than one march. More than one viral moment.

It will take:

  • Sustainability
  • Organization
  • Strategic leadership

It will take serious, local grassroots work — the kind we’re committed to building here in the Northwest Valley.

As Dohl writes:

“This work goes beyond one single day of protest or even multiple large-scale demonstrations. It requires a serious commitment to local organizing and grassroots leadership development. It requires bringing those people who participated on Saturday — and those who were moved by the protests — into our movement and providing them with meaningful actions.”

We’re going to do exactly that here in CD-8. If you want to help:
