Surprise, AZ — Northwest Valley Indivisible and the Big Blue Bubble of Surprise are continuing their weekly, peaceful public protest at Bell Road and Civic Center Drive in Surprise, held every Saturday from 9:00–10:30 AM, in direct opposition to a proposed ICE detention facility in Surprise and to escalating federal immigration enforcement actions across the country.
Organizers say the weekly protest reflects a shift from one-time demonstrations to sustained civic pressure — both locally and federally. Hundreds have already mobilized at Surprise City Hall and along Bell Road in recent weeks, urging the Surprise City Council to pass a resolution opposing a permanent ICE detention presence in the city.
“As residents of Arizona’s 8th & 9th Congressional Districts, we are responding directly to our elected officials,” said Brent Peak, co-chair of Northwest Valley Indivisible. “We are calling on the Surprise City Council to reject any partnership that would bring an ICE detention facility here. We are also calling on Congressman Paul Gosar and Congressman Abe Hamadeh to oppose expanded ICE detention and to represent the concerns of their Surprise constituents.”
Organizers point to overwhelming public opposition expressed at the recent council meeting, where hundreds showed up to speak or protest against the facility. They argue that a permanent ICE presence would strain city resources, introduce unnecessary conflict into the community, and undermine trust between residents and local law enforcement.
Participants are urging Congress to refuse new funding for ICE without meaningful reform, to reject expansion of mass detention infrastructure, and to defend due process and civil rights. Locally, they are asking the City Council to take a clear stand against bringing ICE detention into Surprise.
Organizers emphasize that the protests are grounded in nonviolence, coordinated with local law enforcement, and open to all community members who believe government power must be constrained by constitutional rights and community accountability.
